Background: In 2016, our eGFR Study reported that within 3 years, our families’ kidney function could decline by 3 to 5-7ml/min/1.73m2 every year. We must share with our people what we will learn, about long-term changes in kidney function since the first eGFR Study (2007-2011).
Aim:
To describe our eGFR3 Study Indigenous knowledge communication tools.
Method:
Research as systemised inquiry which grows knowledge, has enduring foundations in Indigenous Knowledge practices. eGFR3 Study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders have delivered a ‘communicating knowledge strategy’ on behalf of, and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. That scholarship emerged from eGFR3 Study Aim 4 and proves integral to all biomedical and technical knowledge development of the cohort study.
Results:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eGFR3 Study leaders considered, enabled and cared for the cohort study from 2014 to current project funding commencement in 2020, and during the transition of research administering institution in 2022- based on Indigenous Data-right (irrespective of where data is held).
Communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about eGFR3 Study research included: Elders and Leaders of communities across WA, NT and Qld, to gain support for the eGFR3 Study and the return of eGFR Study knowledge; Members of Parliament, NHMRC Principal Caucus Indigenous Committee, regional and international research forums, and meetings with other kidney health champions on their Country during eGFR3 Study workshops. Products include, eGFR Study findings animations, participant information video, newsletters, publications.
Conclusion:
Asserting Indigenous peoples’ kidney heath data right is congruent to Indigenous research integrity, that knowledge made available holds power for Indigenous peoples’ improved kidney health. We now call for a national Kidney health mixed media suite.
