Update Course Presentation title: Treatment of Dyslipidemia in CKD

Chronic kidney disease represents one of the strongest risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Notably, CKD leads to substantial alterations in the composition, function, and metabolism of the main lipoprotein classes HDL, LDL, and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, which augment their proatherogenic potential. Therefore, treatment of dyslipidemia represents an important component in the care of patients with CKD. Within the last years, novel lipid-lowering therapies such as inhibition of PCSK9 or bempedoic acid have been developed, which also show beneficial effects in patients with CKD.

ASM Presentation title: Inflammation in CKD and CVD – from bench to bedside

Inflammation plays an important role in the development and progression of chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. Thereby, the innate immune system can be activated by endogenous ligands such as modified lipoproteins leading to sterile systemic inflammation. This is particularly mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome – interleukin-1b – interleukin-6 axis. Recently, anti-inflammatory therapies such as the inhibition of interleukin-1b or treatment with colchicine emerged as novel therapeutic approaches in patients with manifest CVD. Currently, inhibition of interleukin-6 is under clinical investigation in CKD patients. In the ensuing years, the emergence of new anti-inflammatory treatments will expand our therapeutic repertoire.
