Case report- An uncommon cold: rhinovirus-associated rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterised by muscle breakdown which can lead to severe kidney injury. We report on a previous well, adult female who developed severe rhabdomyolysis requiring continuous renal replacement therapy and subsequent intermittent haemodialysis. Full renal recovery was achieved after three months. Thorough infective and rheumatological investigation was only positive for rhinovirus, making this the first described case of severe rhabdomyolysis associated with rhinovirus in the adult population.
