Biography:
Maria Dolores Sanchez-Niño is a Scientist in the Nephrology Department of III-FJD and Assistant Professor at the Pharmacology Department of the Universidad Autonoma Madrid (UAM) School of Medicine. She completed her PhD in Biomedicine at UAM and post-doctoral fellowships at Cancer Research UK, Michigan University and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Her main research interests are acute and chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Fabry disease. Specifically, Dr. Sanchez-Niño research aims to dissect pathophysiological links between acute kidney injury (AKI) and CKD with a focus on tissue resilience through the modulation of kidney and tissue protective factors such as the anti-aging protein Klotho. Her interest expands from the molecular pathways of kidney disease to a more holistic approach to the challenge of kidney disease, including the consequences of chronic kidney disease (accelerated aging, premature mortality) and insights that can be derived from epidemiological studies with a translational vision to the clinic.
She recently received the 2023 ERA Award for Research Excellence in Nephrology from the European Renal Association.
